Description Contemporary mottled calf. Light water-stains to some outer margins, but generally in nice condition; title-page in excellent imitation facsimile. An imperfect copy of this very rare volume, lacking the frontispiece as in the Derra de Moroda copy, and a number of plates. Le Maître à danser is "the most authoritative exposition of the early 18th century French style of dancing… The work was approved by the dancing master Louis Pécour of the Paris Opéra, ‘and may thus be taken to represent the central French practice of its day" (NG2). One of the classic manuals of the dance, which sets down for the first time the five positions of the feet; there are many pages devoted to the correct manner of raising one's hat according to the occasion that may arise. "One of the most important books in the history of dance literature" (Hagelin, Rare and curious books, pp.78-79).
Reference RISM B/V/2 p.686 referencing just four copies (none in the USA). de Moroda, 2130. Beaumont pp.150-151.
