Contemporary calf (few scratches and rubbing), gilt, raised bands, red morocco spine label. Containing, on the front free end-paper, contemporary manuscript references, mainly to eighteenth-century reviews of the work. Brown's dissertation "sets forth the historical background to the musical conditions that Brown thought existed in is own day. It is one of the earliest published general histories of music in the English language" (Kassler p.119). One of one thousand copies, printed by William Bowyer (Maslen and Lancaster, Bowyer ledgers, 4393). |
