| Description |
Folded as produced. Autograph letter, signed, in brown ink, from Julius Benedict's wife to the Dutch mezzo-soprano Elisa Meerti (1815-1878), a favourite singer of Mendelssohn. Meerti was active in London but the letter is addressed to her in Antwerp. "I am taking advantage of Mr Bouche visiting Antwerp to send you a letter, since I did not have a chance to see you before you left and wish you a pleasant voyage. […] But you know what life is like in London during the season […] I hope you know that I love you very much and I hold both your talent and your person in great regard. […] I hope Mr Falcon and his charming wife are well. […] London is always so sad. Next month Benedict will leave for Scotland and Ireland and during his absence I will very likely go to the country with my three children, not sure where. The Moscheles have gone to Boulogne lucky them! to have left this grey and foggy sky […]. I hope to be able to go to Italy next year. […] Write to me soon and tell me when you are going to Germany […] I embrace you and hope to see you soon. Yours Adele Benedict. P.S. With this letter I am sending the air by Madame Viardot which Benedict had promised you. If you write to me address the letter to 22 Queen Street MayFair". |
