| Description |
Line engraving by Jacobus Houbraken and Hubert François Gravelot (1699-1773) originally thought to be after the portrait by Kyte but in fact by Houbraken. The portrait by Houbraken and the scene below with decorative ornaments by Gravelot, although his name does not appear on the engraving. Handel is depicted head and shoulders facing forward, in a braided coat with cravat and wig, within an ornamental surround, the oval border with his name, and outside shells, leaves, sheet music and instruments. Below is a scene from Alexander's Feast, also with sheet music and instruments. The engraving was first issued with the first edition of Alexander's Feast on 8 March 1738. |
