Description |
Affixed to a larger sheet. Stipple engraving by an unidentified engraver. Branchu is depicted head and shoulders, in costume, set within an oval; coloured. "She studied at the Paris Conservatoire and made her début in 1799 at the Théâtre Feydeau. From 1801 to 1826 she was engaged at the Opéra, where she created roles in Cherubini’s Anacréon (1803) and Les Abencérages (1813) as well as the title role in Spontini’s La vestale (1807), Amazilly in Fernand Cortez (1809) and Olympia (1819). Her statuesque presence and noble, declamatory style made her a fine interpreter of Gluck’s Alcestis, Armide and Iphigenia (Tauride), and Piccinni’s Dido. She retired in 1826" (Grove Online). |
