| Description |
Quarter leather (recently rebacked), with continental boards (worn and rubbed, corners reinforced). A couple of corners with Japanese tissue reinforcement. Engraved. Each folio with decorative pictorial headpiece, some after Hubert François Gravelot (1699-1773) and Antoine (1684-1721) Watteau. Early ownership initials on front free end-paper of "M.S. 1743". Originally issued by Bickham in 1736-9 in 200 parts, each containing four folio plates; later issued by him in two volumes of one hundred plates each, with a separate title-page to each volume. This [second] edition by Corbett has the same two volumes format. Among the composers named are Handel, Purcell, Corelli, Turner, Green, Leveridge, Boyce, Gunn, Vanbrugh, Monro, Carey, Lampe; probably the work advertised in the London Daily Post and General Advertiser of 26 July 1740, as being just completed and carefully corrected with a thorough bass to each song by J.F. Lampe. Principally for high voice and figured bass. Part for flute printed at the end of most of the songs. |
