Original mottled leather (grazed and cracked, front joint broken), gilt in spine compartments, raised bands. Some general light foxing' plates with a little water-staining at some upper edges. With the ownership label of the composer Bonifazio Asioli (1769-1832) and stamp of Raffaele Asioli. The Dictionnaire de Musique is seen as Rousseau’s most significant work, and is still a valuable reference work today. Its main object was "to deal with terms relating to knowledge and technique, not only providing definitions but also ... furnishing explanations and showing the relationships of concepts" (NG). The Dictionnaire’s nine hundred entries cover ideas relating to acoustics, music theory, performance, interpretation, the poetics of musical and operatic genres, general musical aesthetics, the history of music and its geographical variation. |
