Description Modern quarter cloth with marbled boards and leather label lettered in gilt. Letterpress. First performed at the Gotha Schlosstheater on 10 February 1775, text by Friedrich Wilhelm Gotter (1746-1797). The opera was originally in one act but then divided into two; Benda asked Johann Adam Hiller to compose a final aria for the first act and an introductory chorus to the second, and two further numbers were composed and appear on pp.22 and 68 of the Dyk vocal score. Dyk concludes that "with permission of the Herren Benda and Gotter, these additional numbers are included in the vocal score, made by Hiller, out of friendship for me ...". Sonneck (Opera Librettos, p.659), confirms that the text of the one example of the libretto he cites, "Eine komische Opera in zwei Aufzuegen" (1778), is practically identical to that of the first vocal score and therefore does not represent "the opera as it was first performed in Gotha". The present score, with the later title and with 56 pages, has no division and is definitely in one act: the first edition of the vocal score has 86 pages, which suggests that the present edition is nearer both musically and textually to the opera as it was originally performed.
