| Description |
Substantial browning. Stippled engraving by an unknown engraver after the image by Édouard Henri Théophile Pingret (1788-1875). A lithograph of this image was first made by Nicolas Eustache Maurin (1799-1850). Paganini is depicted bust-length turned slightly to right, gazing at the viewer, wearing a black coat with white cravat. The image gives a particularly rich and velvety impression, depicting Paganini in his most romantic guise, with tousled hair and gaunt cheeks, the product of his reliance on mercury and opium. It is based on a painting made by Pingret in Baden in 1831, now apparently lost. |
